Why go

Abu Dhabi spreads outward rather than up — across islands, corniches, and desert edges — and rewards a walking pace. Most trips split into two halves: a day or two on culture and heritage in the city centre, then a run out to Yas Island for the parks, or into the dunes for a night under real stars. Four or five days is enough to get a genuine taste of both.

Abu Dhabi's museums and monuments trace the emirate from pearl-diving fort to global art capital, often within a few minutes' drive of each other.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Jean Nouvel's perforated dome scatters sunlight across the courtyard like light through palm fronds. Inside, the collection moves chronologically and geographically at once, threading a single human story across civilizations rarely displayed side by side. Closed Mondays.

Al Itihad Square — the giant dallah coffee pot monument, a five-minute stop and a good orientation point downtown.

Jubail Mangrove Park — a boardwalk through one of the oldest mangrove forests on the coastline. Kayak tours available.

Yas Island: Parks & Family Fun

A twenty-minute drive from downtown, Yas Island packs theme parks, an aquarium, and a Formula 1 circuit onto one reclaimed island.

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

Built around research rather than performance, its 11-million-litre aquarium is ringed by walkways where manta rays pass close enough to count their spots. The coral-lit dining hall turns lunch into part of the exhibit.

Yas Mall — 370+ stores and a cinema, a useful pressure valve between theme parks.

Al Maryah Island — downtown's answer to Yas Mall, closer to the corniche hotels.

Desert & Souk

An hour past the city limits, the buildings give way entirely to red sand — a different pace to close out the trip.

An evening in the Liwa dunes

Camel trains still cross the dunes at golden hour, and desert camps lay out low majlis seating, shisha, and a barbecue dinner under a sky with none of the city's light pollution left in it. Book a sunset drive and stay for dinner.

Central Market Souk — air-conditioned corridors of cashmere, rugs, and gold.

Observation Deck at 300 — the whole coastline resolved into a single map. Go at sunset.

Getting There

Etihad Airways

The national carrier flies into Zayed International Airport, one of the region's largest terminals — its dune-inspired roof setting the tone before you've left baggage claim. Forty minutes from the corniche.
