Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, sits on the north bank of the Congo River, directly across from Kinshasa — the only place in the world where two capital cities look straight at each other. It's calmer and greener than its neighbor: tree-lined avenues, French-influenced cafes, riverside terraces and a skyline that has grown quickly with new hotels and towers.
This guide covers where travelers actually stay, what's worth doing in the city, and the trips locals recommend — from the gorillas of Lesio-Louna to a speedboat hop across the river or a short trip out to Île Mbamou, the Congo River island where Sakana Island sits.
Good to know: two countries, one river
Brazzaville is the capital of the Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville). Kinshasa, just across the river, is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Although the two share a name, a history and a river, they are separate, independent countries with their own borders, visas, immigration and customs rules. Crossing the river means crossing an international border. Check the entry requirements for each country with its embassy or official immigration authority before you travel.

Things to do
In the city
Brazzaville is compact and easy to explore — a landmark basilica, a lively cultural institute and a golf course above the river.

Basilique Sainte-Anne-du-Congo
Brazzaville's most recognizable landmark, with its bright green roof and pointed brick arches — built in the 1940s in the Poto-Poto district.

Institut Français du Congo
Exhibitions, concerts, film nights and a cafe — the cultural heart of the city.

Zoolandia
Brazzaville's zoological and botanical park — a relaxed green space for families.

Golf Club de Brazzaville
Fairways and bunkers perched on a hill above the Congo River, with views across the rapids.
Day trips
Out of the city
Brazzaville is also a base — these are the trips worth making.

Wildlife
Lesio-Louna Gorilla Reserve
Savanna and forest on the Batéké plateau, home to reintroduced western lowland gorillas — a rare wildlife encounter north of the capital.

Landmark
Kintélé Sports Complex
The Olympic-standard stadium and sports village built for the 2015 All-Africa Games, a short drive north of the city.

On the River
Cross to Kinshasa
Only a few kilometres of river separate the two capitals. Speedboats make the crossing — this is an international border crossing, so passport checks and the right entry visas for both countries apply. Confirm requirements before you go.

River Island
Île Mbamou
The Congo River island just off Brazzaville — mango-shaded riverbanks, small villages and a quiet escape from the city. Home to Sakana Island.
