Muanda sits on the Atlantic coast of Kongo Central, close to where the Congo River reaches the sea. It is a long way from the pace of Kinshasa: wide sandy beaches, fishing communities, and a river mouth lined with mangroves.
This guide covers the beaches, the Mangroves National Park, the sea turtle conservation work along the shore, the deep-water port taking shape at Banana, and where travelers stay and eat.

Things to do
Mangroves, turtles and the river mouth
Muanda's best experiences are outdoors, and most are shaped by the water.

Mangroves National Park
The DRC's only marine park, a 768 km² wetland protected since 1992 and recognised as a Ramsar site. Manatees, hippos and crocodiles live in and around the mangroves, so go with a local guide.

Sea turtle conservation
Conservation teams patrol nesting beaches and move threatened nests to protected hatcheries. Ask locally about the nesting season before you plan your dates.

The river mouth
Take a boat onto the wide estuary, where small island communities sit in water that is part river, part Atlantic.

Banana port, under construction
The DRC's first deep-water port is rising at Banana on this stretch of coast, with DP World as investor and Mota-Engil leading construction. It is a working site, so view it from a distance.
